Matt Lucas sums up confusion over Boris Johnson's Covid speech

1f0beb0c1c21ff541a3b68c895d1e364_1544967Matt Lucas has summed up the confusion over Boris Johnson's speech to the nation last night as baffled Britons take to Twitter after being left equally puzzled.

Last night the Prime Minister ditched the 'stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives' slogan, instead urging people to 'stay alert, control the virus, and save lives'.

He also unveiled a three stage exit plan and a five stage alert system to describe the country's outbreak condition.

But the new measures, and tweaks to the draconian lockdown rules - which include being able to leave the house for exercise as often as you want - left people feeling decidedly confused.

Little Britain star Lucas summed up the mood of the nation with a hilarious impersonation of Mr Johnson.

In a video posted last night he said: 'So we are saying don't go to work, go to work, don't take public transport, don't go to work. Stay indoors, if you can work from home go to work, don't go to work.

'Go outside, don't go outside. And then we will or won't something or other.'

Piers Morgan played the clip on Good Morning Britain this morning and said it was 'very, very funny' but that the confusion from Mr Johnson's speech would lead to more deaths.

Brits also found the new advice baffling and posted a series of hilarious memes conveying their confusion with the new measures.

In one meme posted by Peter on Twitter he said: 'I couldn't sleep all night coz I had to #stayalert' then followed that up with a picture of Stewie from hit-comedy Family Guy.

Dave Forey said: '0300: Still alert no sign of the virus. I remain vigilant. #stayalert' then posted an image of Homer Simpson looking out the window suspiciously.

And Twitter user Kalvin changed the words of the new 'stay alert' message to the theme from Agadoo by Black Lace.

The Prime Minister used his broadcast last night to spell out a three-stage 'exit plan' which will see schools potentially reopening from next month and hospitality services from July.

Mr Johnson last night emphasised the importance of getting the economy up and running, amid fears that the draconian restrictions are causing the worst recession in 300 years.

He said the critical R number is currently estimated at between 0.5 and 0.9, 유로247주소 and loosening is 'conditional' on the outbreak staying under control, with the prospect of the 'brakes' being put on if the situation deteriorates in areas.

Last night he stressed that people should 'work from home if you can, but you should go to work if you can't work from home.'

He urged people to avoid public transport and instead commute by bike or on foot - or drive where possible.

But political rivals and puzzled members of the public lined up to pick holes in the hazy blueprint last night.

Labour's Sir Keir Starmer said lacked 'clarity and consensus' and risked causing chaos this morning with employees unsure if they should be in work.

Meanwhile parted relatives were irked that workers could mingle with colleagues in offices while the guidance remained foggy for families, and despite leaked suggestions families could meet in wider 'social bubbles' the PM failed to reference the idea in his speech.

People were further baffled when it emerged that, as long as a six-foot distance is maintained, people can chat in a park with one other person from a different household.
