RS485 Standard Review

por Evie Freitas (2024-05-23)

RS-485, like RS-422, can be made full-duplex by using four wires. 5V is shown in the figure since many drivers are powered by 5Vdc. Other pull-up voltages can be used and it is not an absolute requirement that the pull-up voltage match the driver's supply voltage. The entire subject of handshaking is obsolete with modern USB to RS-485 adapters since the PC's driver's and/or hardware handle driver enabling, and a modern PC can handle data rates much faster than can be transmitted over an RS-485 network. This means that there can be 32 nodes capable to both transmit and receive. This scheme will automatically take control of the network when a byte is transmitted, but there will not be any guaranteed marking time so bias resistors may be required. These examples are for bias resistors that just barely meet the 0.2V differential voltage. 0V differential on the two wires results in a 1 being detected. A decent oscilloscope that is isolated from earth ground (battery operated or powered by an unplugged UPS (if you're good enough with a scope you can also subtract channel 1 from channel 2 to see the differential waveform, or use a differential probe, etc.)) can be a very useful troubleshooting tool.

And since a 120 Ω termination resistor can cause enough signal loss with an extremely long 120 Ω cable to stop the network from functioning, a 500 Ω or even a 1kΩ termination resistor may improve the signal quality enough without causing too much signal loss for the network to function. A termination resistor can increase the signal's quality (reduce ringing), but it will also reduce the signal's amplitude. The ringing will also stabilize faster in shorter cables. Faster rise times will result in greater ringing amplitude. Failure to stay within this range will result in, at best, signal corruption, and, at worst, damage to connected devices. Care must be taken that an SC connection, especially over long cable runs, does not result in an attempt to connect disparate grounds together - it is wise to add some current limiting to the SC connection. Care must be taken when using A/B naming.

The diagram below shows potentials of the A (blue) and B (red) pins of an RS-485 line during transmission of one byte (0xD3, least significant bit first) of data using an asynchronous start-stop method. Using RS-485, it is possible to construct a multi-point data communications network. RS-485, also known as TIA-485(-A) or EIA-485, is a standard, originally introduced in 1983, defining the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in serial communications systems. With RS232 well established and the need for faster communications and over longer distances, further standards beyond RS232 were introduced. The EIA once labeled all its standards with the prefix "RS" (Recommended Standard), but the EIA-TIA officially replaced "RS" with "EIA/TIA" to help identify the origin of its standards. Is there a similar standard for RS-485 on a RJ45? There is no way to say that a termination resistor will always increase the line length the network. There is no hardware handshaking in the RS-485 standard and in most cases it is no longer needed.

100 Mbps over standard Ethernet physical layers. High Speed Ethernet or HSE and the "conventional" Ethernet both share the same physical and MAC levels , but use different protocols. RS-485 is used as the physical layer underlying many standard and proprietary automation protocols used to implement industrial control systems, including the most common versions of Modbus and Profibus. RS485 proved to be a robust standard and able to provide reliable data communications over extended distances. This was developed in 1962 when the need for forms of transmitting data from modems attached telephone lines to remote communications equipments became apparent. The foreword to the standard references The Telecommunications Systems Bulletin TSB-89 which contains application guidelines, including data signaling rate vs. Electrical signaling is balanced, and multipoint systems are supported. Devices with the same connector but from different manufacturers are probably not directly inter-connectable. Interlock (J) - This is a two pin Molex Tripeg connector. Two devices from different manufacturers that adhere to the EIA-449 standard should be able to be directly connected together. If A is negative with respect to B, the state is binary 1. The reversed polarity (A positive with respect to B) is binary 0. The standard does not assign any logic function to the two states.
