Another thing I've done is connecting the slave device to to the SENA RS485 adapter, and use the metal piece on the pins, the middle pin of the adapter, when touching the metal, makes the TX led turn on. I inserted a metal piece in the middle pin of the cable (the TX) and I could see garbage data showing on the screen (sometimes!). I plugged the male-male adapter to the cable and touched the middle pin again, and I could see garbage data again. Pin 1 and 6 however are reassigned to the A and B lines when the port is used in RS485 mode. RX led. When connecting that RS485 adapter to the PC's COM port, sending data to that port would make the RX led flash. Most newer consumer electronics comes with an USB, Firewire or other high-speed communication port, however a lot of industrial and commercial equipment, both old and new, is made only with a RS485 or RS422 serial communications port.

This adaptor connects to the Xwire port on any SPLat controller and converts it to an RS485 interface. These cables allow the dual RJ11 jacks of the RS485 option board of Laureate meters (digital interface ordering option 2) to be daisy chained and to be addressed digitally with no need for a hub. For example you need to consider the noise level in the environment surrounding the serial converter. So what is a RS232 to RS485 converter? A RS232 - RS485 converter is often used in industrial data acquisition and control applications where multiple serial devices communicate with each other through a converter. Due to loading limitations one of the best uses of a RS232 to RS422 serial converter might be in point-to-point communications, such as extending an existing RS232 line. Extending a RS232 line is done by converting the RS232 signal into RS422 and then back to RS232 at the remote end. At the receiver end the voltage difference should not be less than 0.2 Vdc. A Unit Load is defined as a passive transmitter (in OFF-state) plus a receiver.

The advantage of the RS485 protocol is that this it can transfer data over longer distances, up to 4000 feet, and have up to 32 nodes per single network, and it can be used for multi-point networks where multiple serial devices are setup in a bus network. Half duplex has the advantage of only using three wires: ARX/ATX, BRX/BTX and GND. The RS422 converter is used for data transmission, using balanced or differential signaling, it is mainly used in industrial and commercial environments since lots of process equipment and machinery have this protocol built-in. However since only a true RS485 network can have addressable serial RS485 devices, the RS232 converter needs to be addressable either by software or by DIP switches when using it in this type of configuration. RS485 is simpler because it uses only two wire (or a single pair) to carry out the data in bidirectional manner, using RS232, we need 3 wires at minimum to carry the data bidirectionally. Wire up the RS485 stacks and set the termination switch on the first and last RS485 Extension in the bus to "on", as shown below. You should now be able to see all connected stacks in the Brick Viewer.

To create a RS485 bus, stack the RS485 Extension on top of a Master Brick. You should see the Master Brick view with the identified RS485 Extension (see images below). Connect the Master Brick via USB, Ethernet or WIFI with your PC and start the Brick Viewer software. RS485 master is the Master Brick which has a USB, Ethernet or WIFI connection to the PC running brickd. All the other Master Bricks with RS485 Extension must not have a USB, Ethernet or WIFI connection (they can use a USB Power Supply). At the end, press "Save RS485 Configuration" to save the configuration permanently on the RS485 Extension. The Master Brick has to be restarted to apply the new configuration. For master configuration choose "Master" as type and input the addresses of the slaves in the RS485 bus as a comma separated list. With RS485 it is possible to set-up a multi-point application with one master and several slaves. A RS485 bus consists of one master and multiple slaves. This is a method for connecting multiple RS485 devices with each other over a two-wire network. Xwire protocol over RS485 will allow cable runs of up to 1km - with suitable cable and grounding precautions- and up to 32 devices.
