Out-door Games: Cricket and Golf/Chapter Q0

Originally intended for batch processing, it was the first non-symbolic language of high level, targeted to problems. 1994: first World Wide Web Conference, helping to create the World Wide Web Consortium in 1996. June 1994: HTML 2.0 approved by the I. E. T. F., strictly based on SGML. In 2000 most of the world was already connected to Internet, excepting only a handful of Asian or African nations. XML and HTML were combined into a single language, no more based mainly on SGML, which the World Wide Web Consortium approved as official specification with the name of HTML 5 in October 2014. Forth: a structured modular language, created by the astronomer Charles Moore in 1970. It is a medium-high level language, combining characteristics of assembly (of medium level) with those of a high level language. Most of the surviving ones are now connected to the Internet, although a few may still exist working as little more than intranets, serving a limited geographic area.

And the whole point of that is that there shall be more birds still. If I were to identify myself with "Alan Watts," that would be identifying myself with a concept, with words-a rather complicated mess of words, to be sure, but still I would have made that mistake. Can you, in other words, touch the difference between them? Can you point to the division between my five fingers? Words mean something, yes-because they point to something beyond themselves. What does a fern mean? Trees don’t mean anything. Things don’t mean anything. Birds don’t mean anything. What does a cloud mean? Because, you see, music is peculiar, in that it is a marvelous pattern of sounds that doesn’t mean anything. It’s rather like music or dancing in that respect. We talk sometimes about the practice of meditation as if it were like practicing the piano; preparing for a concert. Well, some people say, "We go to the concert to improve our minds." Well, if you do that, you’re not listening.

But the important thing, I repeat, about this kind of chant is that it’s quite different from the ordinary religious exercise that, say, we have in our churches, where we are interminably talking and thinking, and we never get to contemplation. And so if you suddenly say, "But my life has no meaning! It’s your way of life. It’s an expanded present. Because if you had a hairline present you wouldn’t be able to hear one note after another. We come into the present. When we want to put something down we say it has no future. To word this simply, we may say that assembly language is a human-readable text language, and machine code is a machine-readable binary code. Awk: a programming language of Unics operating system, for processing text. Terse: a programming language created by Jim Neil in the 1980's, operable since 1996. Terse gives all of the control that is available in assembly language, with the often easier use that is found in high level languages. Prolog, Programming in Logic: a declarative language (non-procedural) created by Alan Colmeraver (University of Marseille, France).

Because at last you find yourself in the center, the eternal now, in which past and future drop away, in which divisions created by words drop away. So this is a very odd thing for Westerners to understand, and particularly for Americans, because we are so fixated on the future. We are not very particular about what sounds, but just listen to the whole natural flow of sound as you would listen to music. Why do you listen to music? There is some inferior music that means something; what we call program music, like the Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture, or some of Debussy’s perpetrations such as the Engloutie Cathedral, where it’s creating visual pictures or imitating natural noises: the beat of horse’s hooves or rollings of military drums and the sound of the waves, et cetera. Some pictures of us restoring the billiard table are here. The table and the cushioned rail bordering the table are topped with a feltlike tight-fitting cloth. Carom billiards is played on a table usually 5 by 10 feet (1.5 by 3 m) or 4.5 by 9 feet (1.4 by 2.7 m).
