One of the most famous and long-lived fighters of World War II, the Chance Vought F4U Corsair represented a tremendous departure from all past practices of the venerable Chance Vought firm. Long noted for scout biplanes, the company had barely moved into the future with its attractive but not very successful SB2U Vindicator, which saw limited combat and was replaced as soon as possible. The XF4U-1 made its first flight on May 29, 1940, piloted by Lyman A. Bullard, Jr. Powered, like the Hellcat, by the wonderful 2,000-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, the F4U flew at 404 miles per hour by the end of the year, faster than any U.S. The classic airplane would stay in continuous production until December 1952, by which time 12,571 had been built. The Chance Vought F4U Corsair had initial problems qualifying as a carrier fighter in the U.S. Navy, although it reached that status in the Fleet Air Arm in 1943, operating from escort carriers. The Marines used it with great success as a land-based fighter, and by April 1944 the plane was cleared for carrier use with the U.S. The speed, strength, and firepower of the Chance Vought F4U Corsair enabled it to dominate Japanese opposition, shooting down 2,140 against a loss of 189. Its performance and dependability allowed great flight leaders like John Blackburn, John Smith, Marion Carl, Joe Foss, and Pappy Boyington to create legendary fighter squadrons. The "Bent-wing Bird," as the classic airplane was fondly called, went on to give yeoman service as a ground-assault plane in the Korean War, and for the French in Indochina. Length: 33 ft. 4 in. Height: 16 ft. 1 in. Service Ceiling: 36,900 ft. Armament: Three .50-inch Browning machine guns in each wing; 2,000 lbs. Cars come in all shapes, sizes and forms. Just think about all the different options you have when you buy your next car. Many models offer a sedan version, some coupes as well, while others include the practical hatchback. The ability to lower the rear seats gives you a vehicle with ample packing space should it be necessary. Of course, it is defined by its lift-up tailgate over the more traditional trunk lid. But when was the term hatchback first used in motoring? Well, it goes all the way back to 1965. And the first automaker to use the term? That was the French company, Renault. They used it to describe their R16 model. Perhaps hatchbacks were firmly put on the map in the mid-1970s. This was thanks to the "hot hatch" revolution that was started by the Volkswagen Golf Mk 1 GTI. A performance version of the first Golf model, this quickly became the car that every boy racer wanted. But let's now get to the task at hand. Are you able to identify a range of hatchbacks from throughout motoring history from just an image? Let's see how well you do. Let's begin with an easy one, shall we? Since its inception in 1974, the Golf has gone from strength to strength. In fact, Volkswagen’s tag line, "The People’s Car" easily moved from the aging Beetle to this hatchback. Currently on their seventh model in the range over the last 40 years, current Golfs are sophisticated, high-performance vehicles. And popular too. Can you name it? Although mainly manufactured for the European market, the Ford Focus has formed part of the American market for the last number of years. The Focus is the bigger brother of the Fiesta, with the ST model a high-performance version. The Focus is also available in an all-electric version, built to compete with the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. This art icle was g ener ated by GSA Content G enerator Demoversion.

Now in its third generation, the i30 competes in the small family car segment for the Korean manufacturer, Hyundai. It is available in a number of body configurations including 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback, 5-door estate and 5-door fastback. Over 430,000 units of the i30 have sold in Europe since 2012. Name it, please. A higher-performing version of the regular Civic, the Type R was a favorite of boy racers around the globe. First produced in 1997, it is currently in its fifth generation and is available as a 3- or 4-door hatchback or 4-door sedan. The fifth generation is powered by a 2.0-liter engine capable of producing over 300 brake horsepower. The Atos was a 5-door hatchback city car offered by Korean manufacturer Hyundai between 1997 and 2007. Little changed over those 10 years until the Atos was replaced by the i10. This vehicle was driven by a 1.1-liter engine and available with both an automatic and manual transmission. First introduced by Mazda in 1996, the 2, also known as the Demio, has seen four generations.
